Kolkata: The character of brand Tata Tea has changed so it needs a new name, feels its chairman Ratan Tata.
Tata told reporters on Friday after the annual general meeting in Kolkata that the company will consider the change of name in a few months —in the company’s 45th year of incorporation.
“The complexion of the company has changed now. Tata Tea (TTL) is no longer a plantation company. It is more of an FMCG company,’’ he said. Tata added that it has presence in different areas of beverages starting from mineral water to coffee so the current name may not be relevant.
Later, TTL vice chairman R K Krishna Kumar said that the discussion for name change is on and would take shape in a couple of months.
Earlier addressing the shareholders, Tata said the company will look for acquisition in the areas where it has strategic interest. “Now we have 42 brands in 45 countries. We shall go for acquisition which will give us access to new technology and footprint in new countries,’’ he added.
